2. Zero waste lifestyle !

The objective of this lesson is to understand how to reduce and responsibly manage the waste at your home.

1.Refuse & Reduce
The first step to be responsible towards waste is to reduce your waste generation! You can reduce the waste in the following ways:
Buy only what you need, check your inventory before buying!
Go paperless with e-books, e-receipts and magazines and cut down the amount of paper in printing.
Avoid buying the products and take outs that come in packaging (plastics or cardboard boxes)
Buy in bulk and locally to support local farmers and reduce packaging waste
Consider repairing your electronics instead of buying new ones

2. Reuse & Repair
If the waste generation cannot be avoided focus on reusing the products in the following ways:
Replace disposable cups, plates and glasses with reusable alternatives
Buy bottles, containers and grocery bags that can be reused and make sure to carry them when you go out!
Donate your used goods such as books, clothing and electronics instead of throwing them away. It would be better to see them in someone’s home than in the landfill.

3. Recycle your Recyclables
The materials such as plastics, paper, glass and aluminum cans can be recycled. Find shops/stores/locations where you can give away your recyclable items.

4. Say Yes to Waste Segregation
Segregation of wet waste (kitchen waste) from dry waste (paper, plastic, glass, metal, textile) enables you to make compost from wet waste and reuse or recycle your dry waste. In addition, separate Hazardous waste such as batteries, electronics, expired medicines and bulbs from non-hazardous waste. All the commercial spaces and public spaces have bins for waste segregation.

5. Extract value from Organic Waste
Our Wet waste from homes such as fruits scrap, vegetable peelings, yard waste is organic in nature and can be easily converted into compost. The mixing of wet waste with dry waste leads to contamination of dry waste and quality of recyclable materials. House composting bins are available in different shapes and sizes. A ready composting is rich brown to black in color with an earthy smell and can be used as manure for your plants.

6. Consider making your consumables
The world of the internet is full of recipes to make your own detergent, cleaning products, soap, shampoos and condition.
