2. Sustainable Development Goals
A detailed introduction on what these 17 Goals are about and an insight on some of the main pillars and priority goals.
*Sustainable development is defined as the ability to satisfy the needs of the present generation without depleting the resources to be used by future generations. *
In 2015, United Nations member states adopted The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development which comprises the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This Agenda is “ a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity”. It includes the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) having 169 targets with 230 indicators to measure the impact of these targets. These goals are indivisible and encompass environmental, social and environmental dimensions.
It is important to understand that all the SDGs are interlinked with one or more SGDs. Agriculture uses fresh water which is linked to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) while the crop production is dependent on SDG 13 (Climate Action). The Annual report on the progress and implementation of SDGs for 2022 highlights how COVID -19 impacted food, health, education, the environment, peace and security; which affected all the SDGs. This report also sheds light on the reversal of progress made in the last few years on eradicating poverty & hunger and improving health & education.
