Module 6: Water resources

Water is the most abundant and over-used resource on Earth but do we know how is it managed! Let's understand more about on Water stress management and its conservation measures!

Module 6: Water resources

Overview

Water is essential for human life, yet it is taken for granted. UN's Sustainable Development Goal 6 and 14 are dedicated to ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation, life below water. The module covers primary water resources, water pollution and its management.

What you will learn:

  • What are the various usage of water?
  • What is water stress and its implications on individuals?
  • How to conserve water resources?
  • Policies which help conserve the existing resources.
Concepts covered:
Water management , Environment , Water health , Water stress

Topics

1. Water and its usage

Water covers nearly three-fourths of the earth surface but the distribution of water on the earth's surface is extremely uneven. Water is essential to life and is ubiquitous, found even on asteroids and other planets.

2. Water stress

Water stress is an increasing problem on every continent, with poorer communities most badly affected. To build resilience against climate change and to serve a growing population, an integrated and inclusive approach must be taken to managing this finite resource.

3. Management of water resources

Water resource management seeks to maximize the benefits of water by providing optimum water quality for drinking water, sanitation, agriculture, energy generation and inland water transport.

4. Water conservation

Water conservation focuses on efficient use of available use. Water conservation is central to sustainable development because it is necessary for socioeconomic development, energy and food production, healthy ecosystems, and human survival.

Conflicts over water are not new, according to the Pacific Institute throughout history 1300 conflicts have been related to water.
