Module 1: Solid Waste Management

We generate billion of tonnes of waste each day. But do we know where the waste goes once we dump it in our dustbins. This module willl help in understanding the entire in -depth process from source to disposal.

Module 1: Solid Waste Management

Overview

This module provides an insight into the national & global waste scenarios, focused on low income and middle - income countries. It will cover key elements of the waste management system such as source segregation, generation, collection, handling, transfer, treatment, disposal and the institutional aspects in India. Besides understanding the system and its challenges, you will be introduced to appropriate and already applied solutions through selected case studies.

What you will learn:

  • Flow of the waste management system from source to disposal.
  • Waste Hierarchy and an in-depth knowledge about Integrated solid waste management.
  • How waste around you is handled at the municipal level.
  • Management techniques and methods used to minimize, reduce, recycle, recover and dispose!
  • Key policies, guidelines, rules in the waste management sector of India.
Concepts Covered:
Waste management, Wet waste, Dry waste, Waste disposal, Environment, E-waste

Topics:

1. The problem of waste

The waste generation rate is increasing drastically with rising urbanization and population growth. This part will shed light on the overarching problem of waste around us.

2. Integrated solid waste management

To achieve the municipal solid waste management goals, it is necessary to establish an integrated and sustainable solid waste management system that meets the needs of the entire urban population.

3. Municipal waste collection and transport mechanism

Once the waste is generated, the next step is waste handling, collection and transportation. This part will focus on the different types of collection and transport mechanism being followed in the current waste management practices.

4. Municipal solid waste treatment and disposal

The disposal methods and techniques vary from material to material. We will be discussing the different types of treatments and methods involved in this part.

5. Policies for solid waste management in India

There were many policies and guidelines passed to handle the waste in India. This part will cover a few of them.

Case studies

Problem statement:

47% of the waste which includes metals, plastic, newspapers, electronics and batteries is recycled. While the rest 52% of waste that includes scrap metals, circuit boards and agriculture waste is used in the Waste to Energy Program(WTE).
